Finding Motivation in Method Exploration

Will Langston I don’t really know where to begin to settle my thoughts on ideas. I haven’t really begun to question why I am thinking about speculative design in architecture. And what I mean by “speculative” design is just a new way of thinking about architecture that is perhaps beyond the boundaries of technology and possibility that we could achieve right now. And maybe it is not even realistic, but architecture that almost views itself as abstract. This is really interesting to me because it gives us a scope that is not really defined in reality or a specific time frame. This is very important also since I am interested in outer space design. The realm of possibility in outer space is very constrained right now. But in the future, if or when we get better access to better technology and better understandings of our universe we could begin to make some things become a reality. So in my head these two ideas almost work as partners. At least the way I’m thinking about it. Speculative ...

Annotated Bibliography

Will Langston Annotated Bibliography To begin with the annotated bibliography, I wanted to explore more ideas in the realm of speculative outer space design. In the context of designing for our future built environment concerning building for harsh environments of other planets or our future planet.  Du Toit, Wessie. “Space Architecture: A Moonage Daydream?” Engelsberg Ideas, January 31, 2024. https://engelsbergideas.com/essays/space-architecture-a-moonage-daydream/. This article looks into potential proposals for built space-age designs. And I think it is interesting that the author did not consider some of the projects as impossible, because there is detail on construction methods, and material usage. But instead, the main idea that makes these projects devolve into fantasy, might be the fact that humans have not tried to discover how to build with these harsh environments yet.  Özgür, Irmak Yavuz, and Onur Tumturk. Week 4

Will Langston MODI BLOG WEEK 4               In the previous week when I was brainstorming possible thesis questions, they all really centered around a main idea of speculative architecture. What I am defining as speculative architecture is architecture that is representative of forward thinking of the built environment and holds ideas that push the boundaries of what regular people would automatically think of when someone says architecture. And this style opens itself to be inherently objective and controversial.                 So I wanted to do some digging into some articles on speculative architecture. I was looking for articles that might explain the wild/wacky drawings that are seemingly unrelated to architecture and these two articles really stood out to me.   Speculative Architecture - ArchDaily   Idea-Building - Daniel K. Brown           ...
