Finding Motivation in Method Exploration

Will Langston

I don’t really know where to begin to settle my thoughts on ideas. I haven’t really begun to question why I am thinking about speculative design in architecture. And what I mean by “speculative” design is just a new way of thinking about architecture that is perhaps beyond the boundaries of technology and possibility that we could achieve right now. And maybe it is not even realistic, but architecture that almost views itself as abstract. This is really interesting to me because it gives us a scope that is not really defined in reality or a specific time frame. This is very important also since I am interested in outer space design. The realm of possibility in outer space is very constrained right now. But in the future, if or when we get better access to better technology and better understandings of our universe we could begin to make some things become a reality. So in my head these two ideas almost work as partners. At least the way I’m thinking about it.

Speculative design natural links itself to outer space architecture.

I also want to be able to tell a story. Thinking about methods. I want to create a set of drawings that could begin to be read as a cohesive narrative. I’m not sure what narrative I might want to explore but it could be ver interesting to see what a future civilization might look like that isn’t necessarily bound to 1 planet. Or what one of the first cities orbiting a planet might be, or what how a city could develop across many years on a different planets. How our views on design change based on how advanced we are in the future.

This is a collage drawing I did that kinda helped me think a little bit more about method and possibly what I would want to explore more in my capstone.

Ultimately this drawing begins to break down conclusions of modern space station design. And how the main purpose of this architecture is to complete its function without failure.

I’ve been really stuck so creating something really helped me get motivation and thoughts going.

I think the motivation I have for this idea is I really have interest in this topic and developing a set of drawings to not only improve my skills as a designer, but also inform others that might be interested in the future of space design. Audience is kind of addressed in the last sentence but the audience is mainly for myself and my personal exploration with these ideas. But also for anyone that could potentially like to think about ideas of the speculative built environment on other planets. Impact would be having a better understanding on how I can tell the story of the future even though no one knows what the future holds for designers and architects.

  1. Will,

I think a comparative study between harsh earth environments and extra-terrestrial could be a thought provoking capstone idea. However, sometimes Earth can feel just as alien when considering it's geography, climates, flora and fauna, and I wonder if something framing Earth as this alien-like space would not only act to make architects/people care about the future of the planet more, but also reveal ideas about creating well integrated design into our more familiar spaces.
