Possibly rethinking

 Will Langston

I currently have a very broad idea of how I want to move forward with my inquiry. After speaking with Professor Holland, I have decided to ultimately recognize that I want to dive into creating speculative environments. I have a strong engagement for visual storytelling.

Overall, I want to be able to create/design a hypothetical/speculative environment on another planet that does not have any history attached to it, or prebuilt infrastructure to hold the settlement back. It would be restarting on a planet that is slightly different than our own, and inferring how the development of future technologies would help us build on these wild environments.

Thinking of how I want to configure this capstone into more of an inquiry I have a couple of options :

Space Exploration and Terraforming: Research current and proposed space exploration missions, such as those to Mars or the Moon. Look into the challenges and possibilities of terraforming or adapting environments on other planets for human settlements.

Environmental Considerations: Investigate the unique environmental conditions of a chosen planet, such as atmospheric composition, gravity, temperature variations, and radiation levels. Understanding these factors will inform your design decisions to create habitable environments.

Case Studies and Precedents: Analyze existing examples of built environments in extreme or unconventional contexts, such as polar research stations or underwater habitats. Draw lessons from these case studies to inform your design approach for space settlements.

Technological Advances: I could investigate advancing technologies in architecture, construction, materials science, and engineering that could be utilized in space settlement design. Consider how 3D printing, robotics, and advanced materials could revolutionize construction methods in space.

I have been looking into some possible planets outside of our solar system that nasa thinks are the most similar to earth and have a very likely possibility to house water.

This image is an artist's illustration of TRAPPIST-1d takes you to the surface of the third planet from the red TRAPPIST-1 star.

I would potentially want to pick a planet in the TRAPPIST-1 solar system and then depict what a future settlement would look like on it. Potentially studying speculative environments of reimagined cities.

I potentially would want to look into these projects and explore the way the designer thought about taking one aspect or new found technology and how that would influence the design of the settlement.

This image shows a reimagined city based on the discovery of liquid energy.

This project employs the possibility of Chinese investment prompting the transitory integration of hydraulic fracturing within the city for the exploitation of shale gas.

Eric Wong completely re-imagines the dynamics of Britain. In other words, this project explores the possibilities to make this country a ‘truly united kingdom’.

I think studying aspects of this could be a good way of informing how I want to start to make my own settlement on a TRAPPIST-1 planet.

Zooming out and realizing what I've just written this kind of sounds crazy...
I do not know if this is too "out there" of a project but I am really interested in the idea of doing this. Thanks for reading.
