Approach

The investigation into the application of designing in speculative outer-space environments will be seen through a methodology that combines case studies, analysis of existing outer-space architecture, and the creation of hybrid drawings to visualize deeper understandings. This approach aims to bridge the gap between real-world architectural precedents and speculative design concepts, providing insights into the principles that inform both.

Primary Paradigm or Theory

The primary paradigm from which this capstone is launched is rooted in the intersection of architectural theory, speculative design, and space exploration. By analyzing principles from these disciplines, this approach seeks to explore the possibilities and constraints of architectural design in the context of outer space, informed by both observation and imaginative speculation.

Research or Design Strategies

The overarching research strategy proposed involves conducting case studies of existing outer-space architecture, and imaginative outer-space architecture, including space stations, habitats, and spacecrafts, as well as sci-fi films, Nasa futurist paintings, and more. These case studies will serve as a basis for analyzing the application of architectural design principles such as social context, environment, and technology in real-world space environments. Additionally, speculative design strategies will be employed to envision how these principles could be applied in speculative outer-space environments.

Specific Tactics

Literature Review- Reviewing relevant literature on architectural theory, speculative design, and space exploration to provide theoretical grounding and context for the research.

Case Study Analysis- Conducting in-depth analysis of selected case studies of outer-space architecture, examining design principles, construction techniques, and functional considerations.

Hybrid Drawings- Creating drawings that integrate elements of real-world space architecture with speculative design concepts, visualizing how architectural principles could manifest in speculative outer-space environments.

Delimiting the Project

The project will be delimited by focusing on specific case studies of outer-space architecture, selected based on their relevance to the research questions and availability of data. The speculative design component will be delimited to conceptualizing outer-space environments based on extrapolations from real-world precedents and theoretical frameworks. Allowing for an exploration into the broader implications of my findings.

Schedule

·        (1 week) Conduct literature review to establish theoretical framework and identify relevant case studies.

·        (2weeks) Select and analyze case studies of outer-space architecture, documenting design principles and functional considerations.

·        (8weeks) Create drawings that visualize the application of architectural principles in speculative outer-space environments.

·        (2 weeks) Iteratively refine speculative designs based on analysis and feedback.

·        (3weeks) Synthesize findings into a narrative that bridges real-world precedents with speculative design concepts.

By employing this methodology, this research seeks to contribute to the understanding of architectural design in outer-space environments, offering insights into the principles that inform both real-world and speculative architectural practice. Through the combination of literature analysis and imaginative speculation, this approach aims to envision new possibilities for the future of space architecture.

Comments

  1. This is an excellent first pass! I think you've got your methods pinned down, generally. One thing: I think your schedule is upside down-- I imagine you'll spend the first half of the semester conducting the lit review and creating the analytical framework, the third quarter creating the dwgs, and the final weeks writing your results. -Brian
