Exploring Methods from Case Study
Will Langston
I have selected the thesis of Daniel Barker:
This thesis was very helpful to start to understand that maybe I do not know everything about my topic yet, but through method exploration I can begin to understand some key aspects of what I am trying to understand. Because it seems that when looking at his thesis. It is obvious that through these collage methods he was able to understand how Miles was using things such as proportion, perspective, and space to inform his design methods. This could very well apply to what I am trying to accomplish in my thesis. Possibly creating a set of drawings that could help me explore how we begin to build to adapt to interplanetary environments.
Being able to tell a story through my thesis is something that I have been thinking about doing ever since the beginning weeks of this class. I want to potentially take the readers, on a journey of how different environments could ask for a different type of architecture. For the question I want to answer it seems that it has evolved strictly from looking at how outer space architecture and speculative architecture could enhance the built environment. To, how can we begin to tell the story architectural evolution based on off-world expansion into harsh environments?
Or
How can we tell the story of our architectural evolution, into a more speculative built environment when confronted with outer space travel and interplanetary expansion.
Below I have created another collage based on study mars terrain, and how we could begin to understand possible built environments on such a harsh landscape. Considering we have plans of doing so in the near future.
This seemingly was a fun way to start to think about what I might be interested in exploring. I was inspired by the works of Daniel Barker and wanted to make my own collage and how it is specific to my project, and understanding of my thesis so far.
I think creating these as I develop my question more is a good way getting myself more involved in my question. But I do need to do more literary review on these topics that I am coming up with now. I am just exploring through my own methods recently. I have some potential lectures that I want to watch regarding story telling through speculative drawings.
Hi, Will!
ReplyDeleteCollages would be a very effective way to showcase some of the challenges that one would encounter in certain "interplanetary environments." At least, I feel like I will better understand said environments if there pictures/conceptual diagrams of it. For example, The Martian by Andy Weir talks about the deadly climate of Mars, but I didn't get the true sense of dread until I watched the book's movie and saw the sandstorms and winds and airlocks and things. Maybe for your literature review you could look at books that describe the harsh environments you want to address, taking inspiration from the books for your collages. I'm excited to see what you come up with, and great job with your Mars collage!

Katie, this is a good point. I think one thing that we often fail to grasp when visualizing, is ironically the experience of something. I think if Will is able to capture what it would feel like to experience one of these planets or scenarios, he'd make a compelling argument and ultimately capstone. It also reminds me of Daniel's capstone about Miesian collage, and how often photos fail to grasp true expression of space. Maybe Will could look into a more abstract or distilled version of these harsh environments to really place us in a point in time/space.
DeleteWill,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy looking at the collage... it is obvious that this is the path you want to pursue. I wonder if you could create a gallery of collages that, through a timeline like layout and execution, explore brief history and then speculation on the evolution of architecture through something like space or extraterrestrial habitats. Giving descriptions or stories to each collage could support the works and provide insight into the research that was done to complete the collage. In conjunction, you could research and write a speculative paper on the changes needed to move architecture closer to an extraterrestrial future. I enjoy watching your progress, keep it up!
